This year's rankings take in 43 businesses in Kansas and Missouri (except St. Louis), whose headquarters were in the region and whose shares traded publicly. We rank the companies by revenues and revenue growth, net income and income growth, year-end market value and growth in market value. Then we add up each company's rankings in those six categories and divide by six to reach our final score for each company. The Star 40 ranking is based on the final score. This edition of Star 40 is the 24th produced by The Kansas City Star and provides a comprehensive overview of the region's leading businesses by ranking their performances. We also look at CEO compensation, with a rundown of pay and benefits packages. To read stories in the project, go to www.kansascity.com/business.
